What is the best time to visit Kumara Parvatha Trek

The ideal time to take on the Kumara Parvatha trek is during the winter months, between October and January, when the weather in South India is pleasantly cool.

Trekking during this time is enjoyable and comfortable. While the monsoon season (June to September) also offers an appealing trekking experience with lush vegetation, flora, and fauna, the trail can get extremely slippery, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. As a result, we strongly advise against trekking during monsoons and summers.

Summer trekking is not recommended due to the scorching heat, humidity, and higher risk of dehydration. Additionally, the Forest Department closes the Kumara Parvatha from March 1st to September 30th every year as a precaution against forest fires in the upper reaches. So, for a safe and enjoyable trekking experience, plan your adventure during the winter months.

How to reach the starting point of the trek?

Kumara Parvatha trek begins in the town of Subrahmanya, home to the historic Kukke Subrahmanya temple.

If you’re driving from Bangalore, you’ll experience an adventurous journey of around 200 kilometers on a four-lane expressway to Hassan. From there, enjoy the scenic beauty of Sakleshpur and the famous Shiradi Ghat as you pass through Gundya, a small village about 40 kilometers from Sakleshpur’s main town. The final 22 kilometers to Kukke Subrahmanya offer a stunning drive through a forest-filled, curvy road with the soothing sound of streams.

Alternatively, you can reach Kukke Subrahmanya by bus or train. Numerous KSRTC and private buses operate between Bangalore and Kukke Subrahmanya daily. Make sure to book your bus tickets online in advance.

If you prefer a train journey, you’ll be treated to one of the most scenic rides in Karnataka. Take the Kannur Karwar Express from Bangalore, which departs at 8:00 PM and arrives at Subrahmanya Road Junction around 5:30 AM the next day. From the railway station, you can take a shared jeep or auto to the Kukke Subrahmanya temple, about 11 kilometers away.

Availability of accommodations and food near the trek

Food:

Kukke Subrahmanya temple offers plenty of restaurants for an early breakfast before starting your trek, with popular choices like Neo Mysore Cafe and Hotel Kumarakripa opening as early as 5 AM. On the trek itself, Bhatta’s house is the only food source, so let Bhatta know when you arrive to ensure meals are prepared. It’s also a good idea to bring dry fruits, nuts, and non-perishable items like bread and peanut butter or rotis to keep you fueled throughout the two-day trek.

Before setting off, fill your water bottles at one of the temple restaurants, as your next opportunity for water will be at Bhatta’s house or the Forest Office. Carry at least two 1-liter water bottles and avoid filling them from small streams or stagnant sources along the trail, as they might not be safe to drink.

Accommodation:

Kukke Subrahmanya has plenty of options, making it a popular spot for travelers to stay and explore.

The Difficulty level of the Kumara Parvatha Trek

Kumara Parvatha trek is considered moderately difficult and offers a mix of challenges and rewards. It is apparently the toughest trek in Karnataka as per most trekkers. With a total distance of around 28 km, first-time trekkers might find it tough, while avid trekkers can enjoy a more relaxed experience. If you’re physically fit, you’ll overcome the obstacles and be treated to breathtaking landscapes and stunning views, making it a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Throughout the trek, be prepared for a continuous ascent and pay attention to several key sections: slippery trails during post-monsoon months, steep forest areas where you’ll need to hold onto tree branches, and the steep grassland section from Kallu Mantapa to Shesha Parvatha.

Additionally, be cautious when traversing the near-vertical rock face after the second forest section, and take care when hopping over slippery boulders and rocks, particularly after Kallu Mantapa until the peak. Utilize trekking poles and proper footwear to ensure a safe and enjoyable trek.

Is Camping Allowed On Kumara Parvatha Trek?

From December 2020 onwards, trekkers can rent tents and sleeping bags from Bhattara Mane, so there’s no need to carry them from the base.

Earlier, trekkers were allowed to pitch tents in the designated area around the Forest Office only. Also they were supposed to leave the camping gear behind before heading up to the peak.

If you’re trekking during the post-monsoon season, expect some leech company along the trail. To avoid them, apply Dettol or Savlon at the base. But if they don’t bother you too much, simply remove them once you reach Bhatta’s place – a few leeches sucking a bit of blood won’t cause any harm.
